Why US President Donald Trump Wants to Rename ‘Artificial Intelligence’

United States President Donald Trump doesn’t like the name “artificial intelligence” and wants to rename it. The matter came into the limelight when he was addressing the audience at the “AI Race Summit” in the national capital of Washington, DC, late on July 23.
At the loud laughter from the audience at the statement, Donald Trump insisted that it was not a joke, as he seriously wanted to rename the term artificial intelligence. The reason is that he “doesn’t like artificial anything” and also because “it is not artificial, it is genius”.
What’s behind Donald Trump’s insistence on changing the name of AI
At the recent AI Summit, Donald Trump started with “These are the earliest days of one of the most important technological revolutions in the history of the world.” Coming on his wish to change the name of AI, he said, “Around the globe, everyone is talking about artificial intelligence. I find that too artificial, I can’t stand it. I don’t even like the name. You know, I don’t like anything artificial, so could we straighten that out, please? We should change the name.”
The statement brought loud laughter among the audience. However, Donald Trump clarified, “I mean that. I don’t like to name that artificial anything, cause it’s not artificial, it’s genius. It’s pure genius.”
“AI Action Plan” of America Gets Green Signal from Trump
On July 23, Donald Trump signed an executive order that outlined a 25-page “aggressive, low-regulation strategy”. According to an AFP report, the order ultimately boosts the US dominance in the AI landscape against China.
“America is the country that started the AI race, and as president of the United States, I’m here today to declare that America is going to win it… Winning this competition will be a test of our capacities, unlike anything since the dawn of the space age,” said Donald Trump at the event before signing the executive orders.
“Winning the AI race will demand a new spirit of patriotism and national loyalty in Silicon Valley and beyond… for too long, many of our largest tech companies have reaped the blessings of American freedom while building their factories in China, hiring workers in India and slashing profits in Ireland,” he continued.
Referred to as “America’s AI Action Plan,” the three core goals of the project are: building infrastructure, accelerating innovation, and leading internationally on AI.
As per the report, administration consider AI crucial for US maintaining economic along with military supermacy. However, the environmental concerns and consequences have been noticed to be forgotten in the planning document.
The plan is basically a collection of 90 government proposals that talk about sweeping deregulation with a promise from the administration to remove red tape and onerous regulation that can definitely hinder AI development in the private sector.
