Meta’s Newest AI-Powered Smart Glasses | Meta Platforms Inc. is all set to make smart glasses a must-have product for users with the launch of its first version with a built-in screen on Wednesday. The latest model Meta Ray-Ban Display comes with a screen in the right lens that shows video calls, messages, maps, along with visual results from queries to Meta’s AI service. Moreover, the screen even assists as a viewfinder for the camera as well as surface music playback.
While speaking at the company’s annual Meta Connect event, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta Platforms, said, “Meta’s future glasses will be a vehicle for ‘superintelligence,’ a term I have adopted to describe advanced artificial intelligence development and the name of a team inside the company.”
Mak further said in Meta’s Menlo Park on Wednesday, “AI should serve people, not just be something that sits in a data center, automating large parts of society.”
The new AI glasses, as Meta calls them, are going to allow users to offload some of the functionalities to their eyewear while reducing the need to fetch for smartphones for every other task.
Andrew Bosworth, CTO at Meta, said in an interview after the launch that new glasses are “the first serious product” in the space. The launch is undoubtedly a part of Meta’s bigger plan of creating an electronic ecosystem while positioning itself against rivals like Apple Inc. and Alphabet Inc.’s Google.
“This feels like the kind of thing where you can start to keep your phone in your pocket more and more throughout the day,” Bosworth stated in the interview. He also made it clear that glasses are not a substitute for smartphones as a more accessible device to control frequently used applications.
The new control system in the latest smart glass model consists of the primary interface that can be controlled via hand gesture. The gestures are recognized with the help of a wristband that is strapped around the user’s dominant hand. The user can swipe through items by sliding their thumb across their gripped hand, select an item by pinching their index finger and thumb, invoke Meta’s AI voice assistant by double-tapping their thumb, and adjust music volumes by twisting their hands mid-air.

The new glasses are set to go on sale Sept. 30 with packaging including glasses and a wristband. Currently, the product is available in two different sizes and color options: Brown shade called sand and black. The glasses will be sold by LensCrafters International Inc., EssilorLuxottica SA’s Ray-Ban, Best Buy Co., and Verizon Communications Inc. at some locations.
The display of glasses offers a 20-degree field view with a resolution of 600 x 600 pixels. The brightness in the glasses’ screen ranges from 30 to 5,000 nits, offering good visibility to users in outdoor conditions. Moreover, there are apps like Facebook Messenger, Spotify, Instagram, and WhatsApp. However, the glasses will only be able to display Instagram’s direct messages, with plans to integrate the reel feature soon.
The external camera comes with a 12-megapixel sensor but falls short on video resolutions and battery life when compared with non-display models. The glasses are capable of recording 1080p video, and the battery of the product lasts more than 6 hours with every charge. The case offers additional charging support of 30 hours.
The Pricing of Meta’s Newest AI-Powered Smart Glasses
Meta Ray-Ban Display will be available to purchase from September 30 with a price of $799. The pricing is backed by the partnership with two giants despite things being too critical. Meta’s partner EssilorLuxottica seemed to hesitate to put the Ray-Ban brand on their product.
“The truth is, when we started this thing, Ray-Ban wasn’t even sure it would look good enough to be a Ray-Ban product,” Bosworth told. “It was just going to be Meta display glasses. And we did a ton of work to get it into a place that they felt like ‘oh wow, OK, we can see this actually being a Ray-Ban product.’”
At the same time, Brosworth even showed concern regarding the pricing, with doubts about whether the device survives the first contact in the market. The glasses are priced almost equal to the new smartphone. “We’re investing a lot of money,” Bosworth said. “We do think it is an investment that we expect to make a return on investment from. We do think we can get there on the hardware side, as well as on software and services,” he added.
