OpenAI launches Sora

OpenAI has debuted in the short-form video space with the launch of its first social media video app named Sora. The app is currently available for iPhone users in Canada and the USA, which blends generative AI capabilities with a TikTok-like feed that enables one to create, remix, and share their clips.

While the overall intent of the platform might resemble existing social media sites, the bend towards AI-generated content makes it unique in the field. The platform comes with a feature named “Cameos” that enables users to share one-time audio and video recordings. This recording is used to verify the likeness that is further used to create the short clips by users and friends. The software offers complete control over access and deletion of content. This approach makes sure that the user remains in charge of content and no one else is using their content.

Another feature offered by Sora is “Remix,” which encourages users to interact with trends and existing clips. The recommendation of content on the platform is based on location, activity history, engagement, and ChatGPT conversation. The social media app also offers parental controls to address concerns about content safety, screen time, and restrictions on scrolling.

OpenAI is also setting standards higher by reducing the misuse of content. For instance, the public figures can not appear in the Sora video as long as they personally don’t share a cameo. At the same time, extreme and explicit content is blocked by default on the platform. The users are allowed to revoke permission at any time.

The app is launching free of charge, with possible monetization strategies like paid options for additional video generation during peak hours. Also, the early users will be allowed to share up to four invitations with friends.

Sora 2, the latest video model by OpenAI, has been backing the social media platform that focuses on improving physical realism and storytelling through multiple shots, audio-video synchronization, and natural movement. ChatGPT Pro users can access Sora 2 directly without an invite.

What’s Next?

OpenAI has already signaled towards the broader expansion by launching a Pro version, web-based access, and a developer API in the pipeline. Employees working in the internal pilot have mentioned Sora to have the potential of becoming “a ChatGPT moment for video”.
