Elon Musk Starts New AI Company Macrohard to Rival Microsoft

Elon Musk, CEO of xAI, is yet again in headlines for his announcement to create a “purely AI” software company to rival with already leading tech giant Microsoft. Musk turned to the social media platform X to announce, while giving the name to his new venture, “Macrohard”.
“Join @xAI and help build a purely AI software company called Macrohard. It’s a tongue-in-cheek name, but the project is very real! In principle, given that software companies like Microsoft do not themselves manufacture any physical hardware, it should be possible to simulate them entirely with AI,” Elon Musk wrote in his post.
An X user asked Grok, Musk’s AI chatbot, to describe the new project. In the response, the chatbot referred to Macrohard-xAI’s “Playful project name” as a “nod to Microsoft”. Grok said, “The goal: since firms like Microsoft produce no physical hardware, AI could theoretically replicate their entire operations—from coding to management. It’s real, and we’re hiring”.
When the user asked about the offerings that Macrohard will be providing, it said that the new venture will offer software solutions like specialized agents for coding, workflow automation, image generation, and more by collaborating with the multi-agent systems. Essentially, it will focus on AI building and running the entire operations to output innovative tools.
According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, xAI filed for a trademark on August 1 for Macrohard. The application defines Macrohard’s purpose as “downloadable computer programs and downloadable computer software for the artificial production of human speech and text” and for “agentic artificial intelligence,” among other uses.
The new firm adds to Musk’s growing list of undertakings, which already included Tesla, xAI, X, SpaceX, political causes and parties, legal bids, and now Macrohard.
At the beginning of the month, Tesla’s board approved a stock award worth $29 billion that grants Musk 96 million restricted shares under the company’s long-term incentive plan. The awards have been a move to incentivize the CEO to get more of his time, as he remains busy at other wide-ranging businesses.
